Guwahati, May 15 -- The first session of the newly elected 16th Assam Assembly will commence on May 21, an official notification said.

The proceedings will start from 9.30 am at the Assembly Chamber in Dispur, it added.

The notification, issued by the Assam Legislative Assembly Secretariat on Thursday on the basis of an order by the governor, was shared with the media on Friday.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by Clause (I) of Article 174 of the Constitution of India, as amended up-to-date, I, Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Governor of Assam, hereby summon the First Session of the Sixteenth Assam Legislative Assembly to meet at 9.30 am on Thursday, the 21st May 2026 at the Assembly Chamber in Dispur," the order said.

Meanwhile, the seniormost MLA of the new Assembly, Chandra Mohan Patowary of the BJP, was sworn in as the pro-tem Speaker by the governor during the day.

Patowary will administer the oath to newly elected MLAs during the first session of the Assembly.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said on Wednesday that the four-day session will continue till May 26, with the legislators to be sworn in on the first day.
