Kolkata, May 24 -- The CPI(M) on Saturday said the Falta Assembly repoll verdict reflected growing support for the Left among marginalised sections and a rejection of the Trinamool Congress's alleged "politics of intimidation" in the Diamond Harbour region.

The BJP won the Falta repoll with 1,49,666 votes, while the CPI(M) secured second position with 40,645 votes, pushing the Congress to third and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) to fourth place.

Reacting to the result, CPI(M) state secretary Mohammed Salim congratulated voters, party workers and CPI(M) candidate Shambhu Kurmi. He claimed the verdict showed increasing consolidation of Left support among poor and marginalised people.

"TMC is melting away like ice in the heat, while the CPI(M) is consolidating its strength," Salim said, adding that people were increasingly turning towards the Left as their "shelter".

Salim alleged that democratic rights had remained suppressed in the area for years because of violence and intimidation under the TMC regime. According to him, the repoll allowed voters to express their opinions freely.

"If democracy is restored and people get the opportunity to vote freely, the resurgence of the Left is inevitable. The Falta result proves that," he said.
