Kolkata, Aug. 4 -- In a major breakthrough, the cops of Bidhannagar City Police Detective Department unearthed an illegal manufacturing unit in the Ghuni area of New Town on Monday.
It was found that a racket was operating from a rented house to produce fake household and cosmetic products of popular brands.
Acting on a tip-off, a team from the Bidhannagar City Police and cops of Eco Park police station conducted a raid at a residential house in the Shiulipara neighbourhood of Ghuni village. The operation uncovered a massive racket manufacturing and distributing counterfeit Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) and cosmetics.
According to sources, the property had been rented by an individual named Ajay Ghosh, who reportedly was not there at the time of the raid. The accused persons used the residential setup as a front to mix low-quality, cheap raw materials and chemical powders. These hazardous formulations were then packaged into containers bearing forged labels of popular, premium brands.
The counterfeit items were then sold to local wholesalers and retailers at standard market rates, tricking consumers into buying substandard products. During the raid, cops seized a substantial inventory of fake products carrying the brand names of household staples, including Nivea, Himalaya, Clean & Clear, Nycil, All Out and Bio-Cure.
In addition to the finished goods, officers also confiscated loose chemicals, raw mosquito repellent refill ingredients, forged labelling sheets, packaging machinery, and product weighing scales. A case has been registered at the Eco Park police station and a probe is underway.
Investigators are currently tracing the supply chain to locate the printing press responsible for producing the fake brand labels and to track down the local retail markets where the toxic products were distributed. Also, a massive manhunt is on to nab Ghosh.
