New Delhi, Sept. 22 -- The Delhi Police has busted an alleged counterfeit currency network operating across Delhi, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal, arresting two key accused.
The accused have been identified as Danish, 35, of Gaya, Bihar, and Meraj alias Guddu, 36, of Chatra, Jharkhand.
Police said Kotak Mahindra Bank's Gandhi Nagar branch detected 18 counterfeit notes on August 22 after they were deposited by a customer. The customer told police Danish had bought clothes worth around Rs 17,200 and paid in cash. CCTV footage and local intelligence helped police identify and arrest Danish from Gandhi Nagar market. He allegedly told investigators he had procured counterfeit currency worth Rs 30,000 for Rs 10,000 in genuine currency from Guddu.
Acting on the lead, a team arrested Meraj in Bodh Gaya on August 26 and recovered 169 counterfeit Rs 500 notes worth Rs 84,500 from his bag.
Police said Meraj allegedly named two suppliers, "Mama alias Chhotu" and "Bhaiya Ji", operating from Kaliya Chowk in Malda.
