Kolkata, Aug. 27 -- A case has been registered against former KMC Ward 7 councillor Bapi Ghosh on allegations of cheating, land grabbing and criminal intimidation.
According to police, Anita Shaw lodged a complaint at Shyampukur Police Station in North Kolkata, alleging that Ghosh and his close associate, Debabrata Acooli, cheated her after promising to provide her with a flat, a shop and Rs 10.5 lakh in cash.
The dispute dates back to 2020 over a plot on Gopi Mohan Lane. The complainant alleged that Ghosh used his political influence and threats to force her husband to sign a land development agreement for a residential building. The accused also allegedly forced the complainant's husband to sign a Power of Attorney (PoA) along with the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for construction on the land. Under the agreement, the family was to receive a new flat, a commercial shop and Rs 10.5 lakh in cash after completion. While the flat and shop were handed over, the family alleged that Ghosh refused to pay the promised Rs 10.5 lakh.
The complainant alleged that when the family sought the promised Rs 10.5 lakh, Ghosh and Acooli threatened them with dire consequences. Shaw lodged a complaint at Shyampukur police station on August 25, following which a case was registered on August 26.
Ghosh, who was elected as a BJP councillor before joining the TMC, is being investigated. Police are examining property documents and bank records; no arrests have been made so far.
