Malda, Sept. 9 -- Trinamool Congress leader Krishnendu Narayan Chowdhury on Wednesday resigned from the post of Chairman of the English Bazar Municipality, formally submitting his resignation at a meeting of the Board of Councillors. Chowdhury, a five-time chairman of the municipality, said the reason behind the decision was a secret which he would never reveal.
Chowdhury first became a councillor in 1990 and was elected chairman for the first time in 1995. Following the change of government in the state, several Trinamool Congress civic body chiefs, including Siliguri Mayor Gautam Deb, stepped down. Chowdhury, however, had continued in office until now.
His resignation has been sent to the state Municipal Affairs minister and senior officials of the concerned departments.
Clarifying that he was not quitting politics, Chowdhury said he would continue to work as a councillor.
"I am not leaving politics. I will continue to serve as a councillor," he said.
