Kolkata, Oct. 4 -- An elderly couple was found dead inside their apartment in Panchasayar area on Sunday morning.
The deceased have been identified as Asit Ash (66) and his wife Mandira Ash (64). The incident came to light when relatives and neighbours grew anxious after the couple did not respond to repeated phone calls and knocks on their door on Sunday morning. Upon checking the premises, a relative looked through a rear window of the apartment and spotted Asit hanging inside the flat.
Neighbours alerted the Panchasayar Police Station. The cops broke open the front door upon their arrival and found Mandira lying unconscious on the bed. Immediately, police rushed both of them to the NRS Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared the couple dead on arrival.
Preliminary probes suggest the incident may be a case of a murder-suicide or a mutual suicide pact. According to local sources, the couple was battling severe, prolonged health issues for a considerable period. The family was reportedly under acute financial distress driven by soaring medical expenses. Police have sent the bodies for a post-mortem examination.
