Kolkata, July 30 -- Tension gripped Salt Lake's AE Block on Thursday morning after an elderly couple was found dead under mysterious circumstances inside their residence.
The deceased have been identified as Sajal Kumar Kundu (64) and his wife, Ranjana Kundu (61). Preliminary police investigations suggest the couple may have committed suicide by consuming poison, driven by prolonged health complications and depression.
According to sources, the incident came to light on Thursday morning when the couple's son, who had stayed overnight at a relative's house in Ultadanga, attempted to call his parents. Growing anxious after multiple calls went unanswered, he contacted a neighbour to check on them.
When repeated knocking at the gate yielded no response, the neighbour informed their son, who rushed back to the AE Block house.
Using a spare key, he unlocked the front door and discovered his parents lying motionless on their bed.
Immediately, police were informed. Cops from the Bidhannagar North Police Station recovered the bodies and sent them for autopsy.
Local residents revealed that the family had been under immense emotional distress. Ranjana was reportedly battling advanced-stage cancer, while her husband was also suffering from chronic age-
related illnesses.
Investigators believe the prolonged physical suffering may have pushed the couple into severe depression. Police have found a bottle of poison in the room, which points towards the suicide angle. However, cops are waiting for the autopsy report to ascertain the cause of death.
