Malda, Aug. 17 -- A Trinamool Congress leader, who had allegedly threatened police personnel while being taken to court in a prison van, faced an "egg attack" by BJP supporters outside Ratua Police Station on Monday.

The incident occurred when police were taking Shravan Kumar Das, a former Pradhan of Samsi Gram Panchayat and a close associate of Ratua MLA Samar Mukherjee, to court after completing his three-day police custody. BJP workers and supporters allegedly raised "chor chor" (Thief) slogans and threw eggs at the accused as he was being taken out of the police station.

Das was arrested a few days ago over allegations of extortion and demanding commission in connection with government work contracts.

After his arrest, he had allegedly threatened the police while being taken to court, saying that the present government would not remain in power and that he would "see them after five years."

Monday's incident triggered tension outside the police station, though police personnel intervened to control the situation and ensure the accused was safely taken to court.

The arrest has already triggered political controversy in Ratua, with the BJP stepping up its attack on the Trinamool Congress leadership over the allegations against the former panchayat chief.
