Kolkata, July 16 -- NCPI MP Satabdi Roy's vehicle was targeted with eggs in Birbhum's Suri on Thursday after she attended a DISHA meeting at the district administrative building. According to local sources, a group of youths allegedly chased her vehicle on scooters and hurled raw eggs near the district TMC office. Roy remained inside the vehicle and was unharmed.
The atmosphere around the meeting had been tense from the beginning, with a crowd gathering outside the administrative building, some reportedly carrying eggs. Police dispersed the gathering and tightened security before the meeting concluded.
Roy was one of the most prominent faces of the group of TMC MPs who broke away from the party to join the NCPI. Before the split became public, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had been seen attending a meeting at Roy's Delhi residence, a development that had fuelled speculation over the impending political realignment.
The DISHA meeting itself was politically significant as none of the district's TMC or BJP MLAs attended.
On the same day, former Kolkata Mayor-in-Council Tarak Singh, a longtime TMC leader who recently resigned from his civic post following the party's electoral defeat, was attacked in Behala after being called to the police station in connection with a case. As he came out of Behala police station, eggs and mud were hurled at him and the windshield of his vehicle was damaged.
