Cooch Behar, Sept. 17 -- Several people from both sides were injured in a clash between members of the All India DSO and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) at Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma University on Wednesday. On Thursday, both student organisations held separate protest marches and rallies, demanding action against those involved in the incident.
The All India DSO organised a protest march from the Ghasbazar area of Suniti Road in Cooch Behar town. The procession passed through several parts of the town.
Asif Alam, Cooch Behar district general secretary of the organisation, alleged that some university students and DSO members were assaulted on Wednesday by students and others associated with the ABVP and RSS. "Several more members were injured when they went to protest the incident. Some of them are still undergoing treatment at the hospital," he alleged.
Alam said the protest march was organised to demand the immediate arrest of those responsible for the alleged assault.
Meanwhile, the ABVP organised a separate protest march on the Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma University campus. After touring the university premises, ABVP members staged a protest outside the Vice-Chancellor's office. Dipta Dey, ABVP university president, alleged that some outsiders associated with a Left student organisation entered the university campus on Wednesday and raised what he described as "anti-national slogans". He claimed ABVP members were attacked when they protested against the slogans.
"Today's protest programme was organised against the incident. The university authorities and the administration should take strict action against such incidents," Dey said.
