New Delhi, Aug. 26 -- The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on Wednesday successfully conducted a high-altitude trial of its indigenous Military Combat Parachute System (MCPS) at the Nyoma-Mudh Drop Zone in Ladakh's Leh district. The test was carried out under extremely challenging conditions, with the jump taking place from an altitude of 22,000 feet above mean sea level and temperatures dropping to minus 15 degrees Celsius.

The system has been designed and developed by DRDO's Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE).

Three test jumpers carry out trial

ADRDE test jumpers Wing Commander Rahul Jha, the chief test jumper, along with MWO R J Singh, VM(G), and MWO Vivek Tiwari, carried out the jump. During the trial, the team used the MCPS along with its supporting systems, including an indigenous para computer, oxygen system and specialised jumpsuits.

The parachute was deployed at an altitude of 20,000 feet, and the jumpers subsequently made a safe landing at 13,700 feet.

Trial validates system in extreme conditions

According to DRDO, the successful test demonstrated the effectiveness, reliability and tactical usability of the Military Combat Parachute System in extreme high-altitude conditions. The trial also highlighted the capabilities of India's indigenous defence technology, particularly for operations in challenging high-altitude environments. The successful demonstration is expected to strengthen efforts towards greater self-reliance in critical defence technologies and high-altitude aerial delivery systems.
