Cooch Behar, Sept. 24 -- Dinhata Assembly constituency MLA Ajay Roy on Thursday visited the family of Mir Alam Kabir, a young man from Okrabari who died after allegedly being subjected to a mob attack, and assured them of appropriate legal action against those involved.
Roy met the bereaved family at their residence and expressed his condolences. Kabir's mother broke down in tears and appealed to the MLA for strict punishment for those responsible for her son's death. According to the family, Kabir was allegedly physically tortured throughout the night.
They further alleged that Rs 1 lakh was demanded from the family during the night and claimed that he was tortured after they failed to pay the money on time.
The family said police rescued Kabir the following morning and took him to Dinhata Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment.
The family has named 12 people in connection with the incident. Police have so far arrested five people, while the investigation is underway.
The incident occurred on Sunday night in the Bara Shaulmari-Batrigach area of Dinhata-I block. Kabir was allegedly attacked by a mob on suspicion of being a cattle thief and later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
