India, July 29 -- The Central government has taken a number of measures to digitise and quicken the criminal justice system making it more transparent and efficient. The initiatives include faster investigation, prosecution, and coordination between police, courts of law, forensic labs, prisons, and prosecution agencies. While responding to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar said that various digital platforms have been created for expeditious investigation and prosecution and for enhancing coordination between police, courts, prisons, forensic labs, and prosecution agencies.
The Union Ministry has also launched a Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and System that tracks all criminal cases from the registration of FIR to filing of charge sheets by the investigating agencies. It also helps in giving reminders to the investigating officers regarding timelines as provided under new criminal law. The Interoperable Criminal Justice System has been launched for faster processing of criminal cases by electronically sharing FIRs, chargesheets, orders, forensic reports, and jail related information between police, prisons, forensic labs, courts of law, and prosecution agencies.

The Investigation Tracking System for Sexual Offences has been launched to track the investigation process and ensure timely filing of charge sheets in sexual offence cases. Other measures undertaken by the central government include e-Sakshya mobile application for management of digital evidence, e-Summons for serving summons electronically, and MedLEaPR mobile application for conducting medico-legal examination and post mortem. Nyay Shruti, a new digital platform has been launched for video conferencing to enable accused persons, witnesses, police personnel, prosecution, and forensic experts to appear before the court of law through virtual conference.
