Kolkata, Sept. 22 -- With less than a month to go for Durga Puja, another spell of wet weather is set to keep South Bengal under cloudy skies, as a depression over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a deep depression and cross the north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coast between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur on Wednesday night to early Thursday.
The weather system is likely to bring widespread rain to South Bengal over the next few days, with heavy showers expected in several districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rain and thundershowers at many places across South Bengal on Tuesday, with heavy rain likely at isolated places in South 24-Parganas, East and West Midnapore and Birbhum.
Rain is expected to become more widespread on Wednesday, with heavy showers likely in South 24-Parganas, East and West Midnapore, Jhargram, Purulia and Bankura. Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph may also occur in parts of the region. The spell could intensify further on Thursday, with heavy to very heavy rain likely at isolated places in East and West Midnapore and Jhargram. Heavy rain is also expected in South 24-Parganas, Bankura, Purulia, West Burdwan, Birbhum and Howrah.
For Kolkata and adjoining areas, the system is likely to mean more clouds, intermittent rain and a damp spell just as preparations for the festive season gather pace.
