New Delhi, July 9 -- Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday launched the construction of the 12.377-km fully underground Inderlok-Indraprastha Metro corridor, describing the project as a major step towards strengthening the capital's public transport network. The work commenced with diaphragm wall construction at the upcoming Sarai Rohilla Metro Station, marking the beginning of one of the most significant extensions of the Delhi Metro's Magenta Line.
Addressing the event, Gupta said, "The Delhi Metro is not merely a mode of transport but the foundation of a developed Delhi." She added that the expansion would provide citizens with "safe, fast, convenient and environment-friendly public transport" while helping reduce traffic congestion, pollution and fuel consumption. Stressing Centre-state cooperation, she said the Delhi government was working closely with the Union government and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to build world-class infrastructure.
The corridor will have 10 underground stations, Inderlok, Daya Basti, Sarai Rohilla, Ajmal Khan Park, Jhandewalan Temple, Nabi Karim, New Delhi, Delhi Gate, Delhi Sachivalaya-IG Stadium and Indraprastha. Once completed, the Magenta Line will stretch nearly 89 km, becoming the longest corridor in the Delhi Metro network with the highest number of interchange and underground stations.
The new corridor will provide interchange with seven Metro lines, the Red and Green lines at Inderlok, Magenta Line at Nabi Karim, Yellow and Airport Express lines at New Delhi, Violet Line at Delhi Gate and Blue Line at Indraprastha.
According to DMRC, the extension will significantly improve connectivity to key landmarks, including New Delhi and Sarai Rohilla railway stations, Delhi Sachivalaya, Arun Jaitley Stadium, Jhandewalan Temple, India Gate, Kartavya Path and the Central Vista area. The corridor will also operate as a driverless Metro line upon completion. DMRC also said construction is progressing on other priority sections of the Magenta Line extension, with the Janakpuri West-Krishna Park Extension (1.8 km) and Deepali Chowk-Majlis Park (9.9 km) stretches already operational, while the remaining sections will be opened in phases. Construction on the Central Vista Metro corridor is also underway.
