New Delh, Sept. 1 -- Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Tuesday called for Indore's successful waste management model to be studied and suitably replicated in the Capital, which generates around 13,000 metric tonnes of municipal waste every day. He said the focus must shift from "Waste to Landfill" to a "Waste-to-Wealth" approach.
Sandhu was speaking after inaugurating a one-day brainstorming workshop on municipal solid waste management, organised by the MCD in collaboration with IIT Delhi at the India International Centre. The workshop marks the first institutional collaboration between the civic body and a premier academic institution on solid waste management.
The L-G stressed source segregation of wet, dry, sanitary and domestic hazardous waste, along with the use of modern technology, digital monitoring, data management and advanced waste-processing systems.
He said scientific and sustainable waste management was closely linked to public health, environmental protection and quality of life.
He called for collective responsibility involving civic bodies, public representatives, RWAs, market associations, industries, institutions, experts and citizens, with every household treated as an equal stakeholder. He said the workshop should deliver practical solutions, concrete action plans and measurable outcomes.
Delhi Mayor Pravesh Wahi highlighted landfill clearance, strengthened sanitation infrastructure and new machinery, and called for strict enforcement and model wards. Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav highlighted behavioural change, responsive governance and decentralised management through Zero Waste Wards, Colonies and Roads.
MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar said source segregation, scientific processing and resource recovery were priorities, with facilities being expanded to convert organic waste into compost and biogas and recover and recycle dry waste.
