India, Aug. 18 -- The Delhi government has unveiled a roadmap to significantly expand medical education in the capital by adding 300 undergraduate (MBBS) seats, 103 postgraduate (PG) and Diplomate of National Board (DNB) seats, and five fellowship seats across government medical institutions, subject to regulatory approvals. According to the Health Department, the expansion aims to address the shortage of doctors and specialists in government hospitals while strengthening the city's healthcare infrastructure through a phased approach involving new medical colleges, expansion of existing institutions and enhanced postgraduate training. Also Read - Kalyanwas, Bahapur & Gulabi Bagh to get new PWD housing Advertisement As part of the plan, two under-construction medical colleges attached to Indira Gandhi Hospital, Dwarka, and Guru Gobind Singh Hospital will each offer 150 MBBS seats, adding 300 undergraduate seats. The government also proposes to increase MBBS intake at Dr. B.S.A. Medical College and Hospital from 125 to 200 seats, while Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences (MAIDS) will raise its BDS intake from 50 to 70 seats. The roadmap includes 103 additional PG and DNB seats across institutions, including Dr. B.S.A. Medical College, Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC), Indira Gandhi Medical College, GTB Hospital, UCMS, Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital, Bhagwan Mahavir Hospital and Delhi State Cancer Institute. Another five fellowship seats have been proposed at GTB Hospital and Delhi State Cancer Institute to strengthen advanced medical training. Health Minister Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh said the initiative was aimed at creating a robust healthcare workforce for the future. The minister said phased expansion would build a trained healthcare workforce, with adequate infrastructure and faculty, subject to NMC approvals.
