New Delhi, Nov. 6 -- The Delhi government's Food Safety Department collected 40 samples of sweets and dairy products and destroyed nearly 100 kg of food material unfit for consumption during inspections across several parts of the city ahead of Deepavali.
The inspections were conducted in North-East, East, Shahdara, South and South-East Delhi, covering sweet shops, dairies and food manufacturing units. Improvement notices were also issued to eight establishments over deficiencies in hygiene and sanitation standards.
During an inspection at a dairy in Mandoli Extension, officials found foul-smelling khoya, rasgullas and milk contaminated with mosquitoes and flies. Nearly 100 kg of the material was subsequently destroyed.
In South and South-East Delhi, 12 establishments were inspected and 18 samples of sweets, khoya, paneer, ghee and other dairy products were collected. Another inspection at a sweet manufacturing unit in Nihal Vihar, following a complaint, revealed that the unit was operating without FSSAI registration. Three samples were collected from the premises.
In North-East, East and Shahdara, 22 samples, including those of khoya, paneer, ghee, kalakand and other sweets, were collected.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said, "Food adulteration, sale of contaminated items, and disregard for hygiene standards are serious issues directly linked to public health. The Delhi Government will not tolerate any negligence in this regard."
She added that regular inspections had been directed to ensure strict action against violators, stressing that protecting public health and maintaining consumer trust remained the government's topmost priorities.
Further action will be taken based on laboratory reports and inspection findings.
