New Delhi, Sept. 9 -- Ahead of the BRICS Summit, New Delhi is getting a green-and-floral makeover, with roads, roundabouts and public spaces being dressed up to offer delegates a more vibrant welcome to the capital.
The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has rolled out an extensive beautification plan, with more than 15,000 ornamental potted plants, floral boards at 15 locations and artistically designed floral fountains at nine locations planned along prominent stretches and routes leading to Bharat Mandapam.
Major avenues have undergone multi-tiered plantation, with shrubs, trees and ornamental plants filling gaps and covering barren patches. Hedges, shrubs and topiaries are being trimmed and shaped regularly, while a special tree-pruning drive has been undertaken to remove overgrown branches, clear dark spots and improve the visibility of road signs.
The makeover extends to markets, hotels, roundabouts, entry points and central verges, where flowering pots have been arranged in decorative patterns to add colour to the cityscape.
At the heart of the preparations is the BRICS Friendship Rose Garden in Chanakyapuri, a three-acre green space established in 2016 to commemorate India's hosting of the summit that year. The garden houses 107 varieties of roses and symbolises friendship and unity among BRICS nations.
With grass cutting, pruning, landscaping and floral arrangements underway, the garden is being readied alongside the Chanakyapuri Diplomatic Enclave and VIP routes.
For a city often defined by its traffic and concrete, NDMC's latest preparations aim to ensure that the capital's first impression is one of greenery, colour and hospitality.
