New Delhi, June 9 -- With the monsoon season approaching, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has completed around 70 per cent of its desilting work on stormwater drains across key parts of the Capital, officials said.
The large-scale exercise is being carried out under the direct monitoring of Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu, who has been reviewing monsoon preparedness measures across civic agencies. The Lieutenant Governor has directed officials to complete the remaining work by June 15, ahead of the expected onset of the monsoon.
According to the DDA, desilting operations are underway on nearly 261 km of stormwater drains under its jurisdiction, including 69 km in Narela and 192 km in Dwarka. The exercise involves the removal of accumulated silt, debris, vegetation and other obstructions that can impede the flow of rainwater and lead to waterlogging.
Officials said the drive was launched well in advance following directions from the Lieutenant Governor to ensure smooth drainage during heavy rainfall, reduce urban flooding, ease traffic congestion and maintain public hygiene. Regular inspections are being conducted to monitor progress and maintain quality standards.
The L-G had directed the DDA to undertake the desilting drive in mission mode to tackle recurring waterlogging. Officials said timely completion would improve drainage efficiency and reduce water accumulation during the monsoon.
