Kolkata, Oct. 5 -- In a major development just a day ahead of bypoll in two Assembly constituencies, the Election Commission (EC) on Monday replaced the Inspector-in-Charge (IC) of Nandigram Police Station.
Ajay Kumar Mishra, who was appointed as the IC of Nandigram Police Station ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, was removed following the Opposition parties alleging that he was close to the ruling party. Debashis Sarkar, who was serving as the Traffic Inspector (TI) of the Traffic Control Room (TCR) in East Midnapore has been made the IC of Nandigram Police Station.
The bypoll in Nandigram and Rejinagar Assembly constituencies will be held on Tuesday with counting scheduled for October 9. The Nandigram bypoll was necessitated after Adhikari, who won the seat in the 2026 Assembly elections, retained the Bhabanipur seat and vacated Nandigram. Similarly, the Rejinagar seat fell vacant after Humayun Kabir, who had won both Rejinagar and Naoda in the 2026 polls, retained Naoda and gave up Rejinagar.
It may be mentioned that, earlier, prior to the Assembly Elections, several changes were made in posting of police personnel. Later, after the results were announced, the then IC of Nandigram was changed. Subhabrata Nath was removed and replaced by Mishra. Nath was transferred to the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
