Kolkata, Sept. 18 -- In a major breakthrough against cross-border electronics smuggling, cops from the Watch Section under the Detective Department of the Kolkata Police arrested two individuals from the Park Street area late on Thursday night and seized a massive cache of mobile phones, which are suspected to be stolen.
According to police, acting on a precise tip-off, a special team from the Watch Section intercepted the duo identified as Imran Ahmed of Shariyatpur in Bangladesh and Asif Ali alias Chhotu (32) of Kamarhati near a hotel on Kyd Street.
During a search of their belongings, the police team found 56 smartphones from their possession.
Sources informed that the duo is part of a sophisticated transit ring. Preliminary investigations suggest the smartphones recovered from the duo were snatched or stolen across various parts of the city and gathered at a hub for the handover process.
After receiving the consignment of the stolen mobile phones, the Bangladeshi counterparts of the racket somehow used to smuggle those to Bangladesh where these high end smartphones are sold at quite a high price.
