Kolkata, Oct. 15 -- The Kolkata Police has rejected allegations that former Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was targeted in a knife attack, terming the initial complaints as entirely without substance.
Commissioner of Police (CP) Ajay Kumar Nand stated that the incident, which occurred on Tuesday near Banerjee's Kalighat residence, was the result of a misunderstanding rather than an attempted criminal assault. The incident unfolded on Tuesday as Banerjee was leaving her residence to inaugurate a Durga Puja pandal. A woman suddenly approached her leading to immediate intervention by security staff and a subsequent FIR filed by MAITC MP Dola Sen alleging an attempt on the former Chief Minister's life.
The woman, a civic volunteer in the Kolkata Police, was arrested. After a probe, cops reportedly came to the conclusion that the entire scene was a misunderstanding. The CP further disclosed that both the woman and her father are long-time acquaintances of Banerjee and she had merely approached the former Chief Minister to speak with her. No weapon was found in her possession. As the probe revealed no foul play, the civic volunteer was granted bail on Wednesday as the public prosecutor did not oppose the bail petition.
