Cooch Behar, Sept. 18 -- Cooch Behar district has set a target of installing 1,200 rooftop solar plants by March 2027 under the 'Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana'. With around 1,100 consumers already applying for the scheme, the Electricity Department is now working to speed up installations, with officials aiming to complete a major portion of the work before Durga Puja.
So far, solar plants have been installed at the homes of 136 applicants in the district. The Electricity Department has taken steps to expedite the installation process for the remaining applicants.
Biswajit Das, Regional Manager of the Cooch Behar Electricity Department, said, "The initiative to install solar plants at the homes of general consumers is being implemented through the 'Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana'. There is a plan to meet the set target by March 2027, and work is progressing accordingly. Currently, around 1,100 applications have been received in Cooch Behar district, and 136 solar plants have been installed." According to officials, consumers can significantly reduce their electricity bills by generating power through rooftop solar plants. The system includes two meters - a generation meter and an export-import meter.
If solar generation falls due to adverse weather conditions, electricity consumption can be monitored through the export-import meter. Das said the scheme could substantially reduce electricity costs for many households. Special provisions are also available for consumers belonging to SC and ST communities.
