Kolkata, Oct. 7 -- Several Congress workers were detained on Wednesday after police stopped the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee's protest march towards Lok Bhavan, where the party planned to submit a deputation to the Governor demanding the resignation and arrest of CEC Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the SIR of electoral rolls.

Police barricaded the route near the Lok Bhavan gate, leading to a scuffle when protesters attempted to remove the guardrails and proceed.

Several workers were detained and taken away in prison vans. Carrying party flags and placards, protesters raised slogans against Kumar, while some sat or lay on the road after being stopped. Congress workers claimed they had permission to hold the programme but alleged that police obstructed their march.

The Kolkata protest came amid similar demonstrations by Opposition parties in Delhi seeking Kumar's resignation over alleged irregularities in the SIR exercise.
