New Delhi, Sept. 1 -- The Congress on Tuesday attacked the Modi government's latest GDP figures, alleging the administration has repeatedly changed methodology to inflate growth numbers while the real economic situation remains bleak.
Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh claimed that if the Modi government released actual figures, the growth rate would be substantially lower. He pointed to a discrepancy between nominal and real GDP, which the government pegs at 2.3 per cent, while Wholesale Price Index inflation stands above 9 per cent. "Yesterday's GDP numbers are simply statistical gymnastics," Ramesh said. The government changed its GDP calculation methodology twice this year, moving away from the WPI in June, he said.
The April-June quarter registered 7.8 per cent growth, down from 8.6 per cent in the previous quarter.
In a press conference, Party leader Salman Soz questioned the disconnect between headline growth and ground-level conditions.
