Kolkata, Oct. 4 -- West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Sunday announced that his government would implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state within six months, linking it to measures against what he termed "love jihad", "land jihad" and religious conversion.
Addressing a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) programme in Alipore to mark the birth centenary of VHP leader and Ram Janmabhoomi movement figure Ashok Singhal, Adhikari said the UCC was at the centre of his government's cultural and political agenda.
"As long as I am the Chief Minister, no insult to any saint, seer or religious preacher will be tolerated," he said, adding that the government would not allow any attack on the "essence and meaning" of the saffron colour or permit "anti-national" or "anti-Hindustan" activities.
The Chief Minister also announced plans to give the Gangasagar Mela an international profile, besides a
mass Hanuman Chalisa recital by 20,000 people at Netaji Indoor Stadium on November 17 and a Gita recital involving 10 lakh people on
December 29.
