India, May 13 -- In a heartwarming gesture ahead of International Nurses Day, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta made an unannounced visit to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital on Tuesday, interacting with nurses, appreciating their contribution to healthcare and boosting their morale through personal conversations and gestures of gratitude. Walking through different wards of LNJP Hospital, the Chief Minister met nursing staff on duty, listened to their experiences and acknowledged the challenges they face while caring for patients round the clock. She also presented flowers to nurses as a mark of respect, a gesture that left many staff members emotional. Addressing the nursing staff during the visit, Rekha Gupta said, "Nursing is not merely a profession but a reflection of compassion, humanity and service." She added, "Doctors provide treatment, but it is nurses who give patients emotional strength and care that often helps them heal." The Chief Minister praised the dedication and patience shown by nurses even under difficult circumstances, saying their service forms the backbone of Delhi's healthcare system. She also interacted with nurses from different states, including Kerala, Rajasthan and Punjab, and acknowledged their contribution towards strengthening healthcare services in the Capital. During the interaction, the Chief Minister also announced a major decision regarding nursing interns. She said the Delhi government has implemented a 27-fold increase in the stipend for nursing interns after a wait of 27 years. The stipend has been raised from Rs 500 to Rs 13,150, benefiting around 180 nursing interns. In another major development, the government has also distributed appointment letters to 1,388 nursing officers and 41 paramedical staff members to strengthen healthcare services in the capital. Reaffirming the government's commitment to healthcare workers, Rekha Gupta said the Delhi Government is focused on improving the work culture and safeguarding the rights of nurses and medical staff. "Respecting nursing staff, who work tirelessly day and night in service of patients, is the shared responsibility of both the government and society," she said. Extending greetings on International Nurses Day, the CM wished nurses good health, strength and continued success in their service to humanity.
