New Delhi, May 25 -- Continuing the Delhi government's push for sustainable mobility and fuel conservation, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday travelled to the Delhi Secretariat using the Metro and a DTC bus under the 'Metro Monday' initiative, urging citizens to adopt public transport as part of their routine lives. Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta also joined the campaign, commuting to the Vidhan Sabha by Metro from Tilak Marg.
The initiative, launched under the Delhi government's 'Mera Bharat, Mera Yogdan' campaign inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for fuel conservation, encourages residents to use public transport at least one day a week to reduce pollution, save fuel and ease traffic congestion in the national capital.
Travelling by Metro and bus for the second consecutive Monday, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta interacted with commuters during the journey and appealed to people to actively participate in the campaign. She said the government was "not just making policies, but leading by example" to create awareness about environmentally responsible practices.
According to the Chief Minister, public transport adoption is directly linked to national interest, as every shared commute contributes to lower carbon emissions, reduced fuel consumption and improved urban mobility. She said increasing the use of buses and Metro services would help reduce the number of private vehicles on Delhi's roads, improve travel times and strengthen the city's environmental sustainability.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the government's efforts to modernise and strengthen Delhi's public transport infrastructure. These include expansion of the Metro network, induction of more electric buses, improvement in bus services, better interstate connectivity and promotion of shared mobility systems. She said the broader objective was to create a cleaner, greener and future-ready transport network for the capital.
Meanwhile, Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta travelled from Supreme Court Metro Station to Vidhan Sabha Metro Station, changing trains at Rajiv Chowk during his journey. He interacted with passengers and stressed the importance of adopting eco-friendly commuting options in everyday life.
The Speaker said initiatives like 'Metro Monday' were aimed at strengthening public participation in sustainable urban transport while also promoting fuel conservation and reducing traffic congestion in Delhi.
The campaign comes amid growing concerns over pollution levels and increasing vehicular traffic in the capital. By choosing public transport themselves, senior leaders of the Delhi government are attempting to turn the initiative into a larger public movement centred on environmental responsibility and sustainable urban living.
