India, July 17 -- Delhi Lieutenant Governor Sardar T.S. Sandhu on Thursday inaugurated the 48th Sree Jagannath Rath Yatra at the Lord Jagannath Mandir on Hauz Khas Village Road, New Delhi, in the presence of saints, Dharma Gurus and devotees of Lord Jagannath. Calling it a privilege to participate in the annual procession, he congratulated the organisers for successfully conducting the 48th edition of the Yatra and said their sustained devotion and dedication had helped the tradition flourish in the heart of the national capital. As part of the ceremony, the Lieutenant Governor performed the sacred ritual of Chhera Pahanra, ceremonially sweeping the chariots of the deities with a broom before the procession commenced. He said the centuries old tradition symbolises that no one, regardless of position or status, is above service to the divine. According to him, the ritual conveys a timeless message of humility and selfless service, emphasising that true devotion lies in serving rather than in power or authority.
Describing the Jagannath Rath Yatra as one of India's most ancient and revered festivals, the Lieutenant Governor said it stands as a living symbol of the country's civilisational continuity and spiritual heritage. He noted that the festival has endured for centuries, drawing devotees from across the country and beyond while continuing to uphold the values of devotion, humility and selfless service. He also highlighted the unique significance of the festival, saying Lord Jagannath comes out of the temple once every year to grant darshan and blessings to all devotees, irrespective of their background or social standing. He said this tradition reflects a deeply egalitarian spirit, reinforcing the belief that divine grace is available equally to everyone. The Lieutenant Governor observed that festivals such as the Rath Yatra strengthen the city's social and cultural fabric by promoting reflection, community bonding and collective devotion. Appreciating the efforts of devotees and volunteers in ensuring the smooth conduct of the celebration, he concluded by praying for the health, peace and prosperity of the people of Delhi and expressed hope that the spirit of devotion and service would continue to inspire the city.
