Kolkata, Sept. 24 -- Police have framed charges against former TMC councillor of Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC), Debraj Chakraborty, at the Barasat court on Thursday.
Chakraborty has been charged under the organised syndicate crime provisions including extortion as mentioned in the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The court rejected the defense's arguments for discharge, finding sufficient prima facie evidence across multiple supplementary police charge sheets to proceed to trial. The formal trial, including witness testimonies, is likely to begin next week.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) in its chargesheet mentioned that Chakraborty allegedly ran a widespread extortion syndicate across the Baguiati, Kestopur, and Rajarhat-Gopalpur areas. Investigators allege that Chakraborty systematically built an empire worth Rs 100 crore by extorting local real estate promoters, builders and businessmen.
