Kolkata, Sept. 8 -- Union Road Transport and Highway minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday announced that the Centre has approved Rs 1,042.62 crore for the widening and strengthening of six road projects in West Bengal spanning 194.10 km under the Central Road Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) Scheme.
In a social media post, Gadkari said that these projects will improve road connectivity, reduce travel time, enhance safety and strengthen access to markets, educational institutions and healthcare facilities.
"They will also boost regional trade, support local economies, improve last-mile connectivity and create better conditions for economic activity, tourism and overall development across the state.#PragatiKaHighway #GatiShakti," reads his social media post. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari entrusted all govt agencies and departments concerned with the task of repairing battered roads in the city.
The CM had earlier set a deadline of Oct 10 for all agencies to complete road repairs ahead of puja. Adhikari recently held a review meeting with the Kolkata Port Trust, Garden Reach Ship Builders, PWD and KMC officials at Nabanna to discuss on the condition of roads in the port areas of Taratala and Garden Reach and directed fast-track repair of the stretches. The meeting was called a day after Adhikari travelled to Garden Reach with Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and noticed the poor condition of roads there.
Potholes on roads in various thoroughfares are a serious concern for the state government. In many places the roads are in bad shape.
CM had met PWD officials and funds were sanctioned for road repairs, the panchayat department was given the job to repair 3,200 roads in its areas and the urban development and municipal affairs department was told to repair roads in their jurisdictions.
