New Delhi, Sept. 18 -- A peculiar symbol on a tempo, spotted during analysis of around 50 CCTV cameras, helped Delhi Police trace four people allegedly involved in the gang rape and murder of a teenage girl, whose decomposed body was found in an open field here, officials said.
The girl, aged around 15-17, was allegedly raped, stabbed to death and dumped in an open field by four people, including three juveniles, after she went with them in the tempo. The accused knew the girl and allegedly drank with her before the incident, police said.
Her body was found near Jaipal Rana's field on Kushak Road on September 13. It was highly decomposed, with stray dogs having eaten parts of it and one hand separated from the body. The gender could not initially be established. Police said the family had not filed a missing complaint as the girl would often leave home and return after a few days. Her daily-wage labourer parents also lacked documents establishing her exact age. A doctor later estimated it at 15-17 years.
With no eyewitnesses, immediate clues or CCTV near the spot, investigators traced a tempo captured by a distant camera. Its registration number was obscured by darkness, but a distinctive round-ring symbol and an AC unit helped investigators track it through around 50 cameras.
The tempo was traced to Khadda Colony in Swaroop Nagar during a night-long operation on September 15-16. The driver, Shivam alias Sudama alias Chuchu, was identified and questioned, leading to the apprehension of three juveniles, aged 16 and 17.
Police recovered two knives, clothes allegedly worn by the accused and the tempo. Further investigation is underway. mpost
