India, June 27 -- Delhi is set to strengthen its position on the global sporting map after securing the hosting rights for the ISF World School Wrestling Championship and ISF World School Badminton Championship in 2027, marking the first time the national capital will host the prestigious international school sporting event. The championships are expected to bring together over 1,000 student-athletes from more than 50 countries, giving Indian school players an opportunity to compete against international talent on home soil. The hosting rights were formalised on Friday through a historic tripartite agreement signed between the Government of NCT of Delhi, the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) and the International School Sport Federation (ISF) in the presence of Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood. Also Read - Student innovators get Delhi govt boost Calling the agreement a milestone for school sports, Sood said, "The Government of Delhi, in collaboration with SGFI and ISF, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding to host these prestigious international school sporting events next year. The championships will feature wrestling and badminton competitions, with participation from over 50 countries and more than 1,000 athletes." He said the event would provide young athletes with international exposure while strengthening Delhi's sporting ecosystem. "This agreement will boost the morale of young athletes, enhance their performance, and provide them with exposure to world-class sporting facilities and international competition. It will also strengthen Delhi's sports ecosystem and further establish the capital as a capable host for future national and international sporting events," he said, adding that preparations for the championships would begin immediately. The event will bring together thousands of student-athletes, coaches, technical officials and delegates from across the globe." Sood added that the championships would complement Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Khelo India' and 'Fit India' vision. He also noted that after hosting the Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships in July 2026, the ISF championships in 2027 would further enhance Delhi's identity as a destination for international sporting events.
