Kolkata, Sept. 9 -- The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday extended the interim bail granted to CPI(M) leader Md. Lahek Ali, who was arrested by the West Bengal Police STF in July following violence in Baruipur in South 24 Parganas after the rape and murder of a minor girl.
Justice Tirthankar Ghosh had granted Ali interim bail till September 10, citing the critical medical condition of his mother. The court had also directed the police to produce video footage allegedly showing Ali making statements that incited violence during the unrest.
However, the prosecution informed the court on Wednesday that it could not produce the footage as the pen drive containing the material had not yet been brought from the concerned police station.
Public Prosecutor Kallol Mandal sought additional time to place the footage before the court. Accepting the request, Justice Ghosh extended Ali's interim bail till October 12.
