Kolkata, Aug. 28 -- The Calcutta High Court on Friday allowed a citizens' group to urgently move a petition concerning a proposed demonstration against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal.
The matter was mentioned before Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya by counsel representing Sangrami Ganamancha, who sought the court's permission to file the petition on an urgent basis.
The counsel told the court that the organisation was planning to hold a demonstration on September 2, with more than 5,000 people expected to participate. The submission prompted the court to question why the plea had not been brought before it earlier, particularly when the proposed programme had already been scheduled.
The court also sought clarification on whether the organisation was the same group that had earlier deferred another demonstration. Counsel clarified that the earlier programme involved a different organisation and had no connection with the proposed SIR protest.
Despite its questions over the timing of the application, the court permitted Sangrami Ganamancha to institute the proceedings. "Leave granted. Monday," the court said, indicating that the matter could be taken up on Monday. The SIR exercise in Bengal began in October last year as part of the second phase of the nationwide electoral-roll revision process
