Raiganj, Aug. 28 -- Political tension has reportedly gripped Chopra in North Dinajpur after an audio clip, allegedly featuring a woman making bribery accusations against several BJP leaders, went viral on social media.
The audio clip allegedly claimed that several local BJP leaders had taken money from the owner of a tea garden in the Chopra area. The leaders named in connection with the allegations include Subodh Sarkar, a member of the BJP district committee, Nitya Paul, president of the Chopra No. 2 Mandal committee, along with Bisnu Orao, Rabi Orao, Kesto Das and Tajo Mahammad. However, Millennium Post has not verified the authenticity of the clip.
Following the circulation of the audio clip, BJP leaders lodged a complaint at Chopra police station on Thursday evening, alleging that the social media post was defamatory and part of a conspiracy to malign their reputation.
Subodh Sarkar, a member of the BJP district committee, said, "We found an audio clip of a woman circulating on social media in which allegations were made that we had taken money from a local tea garden. This is a conspiracy by leaders of the opposition party to defame us. We have lodged a complaint at Chopra police station and demanded legal action against those responsible. I will also file a defamation case in court very soon."
Nitya Paul, president of the Chopra No. 2 Mandal committee, alleged that the audio clip was posted by Pinky Saha, who, according to him, was associated with the TMC. "The allegations that we collected money from a tea garden owner are completely baseless and false. We have demanded her arrest after a proper investigation. Our senior party leaders have also been informed about the alleged fake post," he stated.
A senior police officer of Chopra police station said that a complaint had been received from BJP leaders. "The matter is being investigated," the officer said.
