Raiganj, May 11 -- Tension gripped Chopra in North Dinajpur after police arrested BJP leader Subrata Adhikari from his residence at Majhiwali village under Chopra Police Station on Sunday night in connection with an old case.
Subrata Adhikari is the brother of Shankar Adhikari, the BJP candidate who had contested the recent Assembly election from Chopra Constituency and was defeated.
Soon after the arrest, Shankar Adhikari along with several BJP workers and supporters reached Chopra police station and staged a protest alleging partiality by the Inspector-in-Charge (IC) of the police station.
The agitators accused the police of deliberately targeting BJP activists in the area. The protest created tension in the locality for several hours, though no untoward incident was reported. Police personnel were deployed around the police station to prevent any deterioration of the situation.
Speaking to reporters, Shankar Adhikari alleged: "Police arrested Subrata Adhikari without proper reason or investigation. Since joining the Chopra police
station, the IC has been harassing BJP members intentionally. We want impartial policing without political favour."
He also claimed that some BJP workers had allegedly faced harassment earlier. However, Chopra police denied the allegations. Keshab Baral, IC of Chopra Police Station, said: "Subrata Adhikari was arrested for his alleged involvement in an old criminal case and was produced before a court on Monday".
