Raiganj, Oct. 14 -- The BJP captured the board of Raiganj Panchayat Samity in North Dinajpur district for the first time on Wednesday with Jagat Tara Shil and Palash Deb being elected as Sabhapati and Sahakari Sabhapati respectively.
The elections were held at the Panchayat Samity office. Of the total 42 members, only 15 BJP members attended the meeting, while members of other political parties remained absent. BJP leaders and supporters expressed happiness over the party's success in capturing the board. It was reported that following the change of power in the state, Jayshree Byapari Barman, the Sabhapati, and Bijay Sarkar Bhowmik, the Sahakari Sabhapati of the erstwhile Trinamool Congress-led board, submitted their resignations to the Raiganj Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) on September 22, reportedly citing personal reasons.
Since their resignations, the delivery of services to residents had reportedly been affected, triggering concerns over the functioning of the Panchayat Samity.
After her election, newly-elected Sabhapati Jagat Tara Shil said: "The 15 BJP members present at the meeting had elected me to the post. Our first priority will be to ensure that Central government schemes reach the common people and to accelerate the overall development of the block."
