Malda, Sept. 23 -- A cleanliness drive by the BJP at Malda Medical College and Hospital's Trauma Care Centre was suspended on Wednesday after party workers found the patients' ward toilets in an extremely unhygienic condition.
The drive was organised as part of the party's "Seva Sankalp Abhiyan", launched on September 17 in connection with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's birthday and scheduled to continue till October 18. BJP South Malda district president Ajay Ganguly, along with vice-president Manabendra Chakraborty and leader Bishnupada Roy, reached the hospital to conduct the cleaning operation. However, they reportedly stopped after entering the toilets and encountering foul smells, accumulated dirt and broken fittings.
"Patients are perhaps not using these toilets because the condition is so filthy. Dirt has accumulated in every corner and several fixtures are broken. The situation clearly shows how badly the maintenance system has functioned," Ganguly said. He added that the toilets required professional cleaning and that party workers could not undertake the job themselves.
"We have requested the hospital authorities to conduct a special four-to-five-day cleaning drive across the hospital,"
Ganguly said.
