New Delhi, Sept. 2 -- Bollywood star Akshay Kumar is presently shooting for Vipul Amrutlal Shah's sci-fi action thriller 'Samuk' in the UK. And reportedly, Bengali actress Rukmini Maitra might be seen as the lead actress opposite Khiladi Kumar. Directed by Kanishk Varma, the film is expected to be released in 2027.
If Rukmini finally gets cast as the leading lady, then this would be a breakthrough for the Bengali actress. Mostly South Indian actresses are seen alongside major Bollywood actors, but if Rukmini lands the role, this would indeed be a huge achievement for a Bengali actress.
Despite working in Bengali films, Rukmini made sure to keep her Bollywood aspirations alive. So, in 2021, she made her Bollywood debut in 'Sanak' opposite Vidyut Jammwal. Later in Jammwal's 'Crakk' in 2023, she made a special appearance. It's been more than a year since Rukmini has shifted to Mumbai to try her luck in Hindi films.
In between, she appeared in Bengali films like 'Binodiini', based on legendary Bengali theatre actress Binodini Dasi and 'Haati Haati Paa Paa'. Up next in Bengal, the actress would be seen opposite actor Dev in 'Bike Ambulance Dada'.
Meanwhile, producer Shah and Akshay go back a long way. They have worked together in films like 'Aankhen', 'Waqt: The Race Against Time', 'Namastey London' and 'Action Replayy'. Their last collaboration, 'Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty', was released in 2014. Reports suggest Shah has roped in Chris Peters, who has worked as an art director on 'Avengers: Doomsday', for the Bollywood film.
