Kolkata, May 13 -- West Bengal recorded an 85.94 per cent pass percentage in the CBSE Class XII examinations this year, remaining above the national average of 85.20 per cent despite a decline of 3.22 percentage points from last year's 89.16 per cent, according to results declared by the Central Board of Secondary Education on Wednesday.

A total of 46,801 students from the state appeared for the examination, of whom 40,219 passed.

Nationally, the overall Class XII pass percentage fell by 3.19 percentage points from 88.39 per cent last year to 85.20 per cent this year.

The Bhubaneswar region, under which West Bengal falls, recorded a pass percentage of 81.71 per cent in Class XII and was placed 16th among the regions.

Girls outperformed boys in West Bengal once again, with a pass percentage of 89.37 per cent compared with 83.22 per cent among boys.

The CBSE data showed that West Bengal had 366 affiliated schools and 158 examination centres this year. Independent schools accounted for the largest share of candidates and recorded a pass percentage of 85.15 per cent.

Among school categories, Kendriya Vidyalayas recorded the highest success rate in the state at 98.42 per cent, followed by Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas at 96.23 per cent. Government schools posted a pass percentage of 95.66 per cent, while government-aided schools recorded 86.90 per cent.

Among social categories, Scheduled Tribe students registered the highest pass percentage at 86.60 per cent, followed by general category students at 86.38 per cent. Scheduled Caste students recorded 84.44 per cent, while Other Backward Classes students posted 84.45 per cent.

Though CBSE did not publish a merit list in line with its policy to avoid unhealthy competition, several Kolkata schools reported strong performances.

South Point High School recorded a school average of 82.61 per cent, with 25 students scoring 95 per cent and above and 101 securing between 90 per cent and 94.8 per cent. Somdutta Mondal topped the school with 98.60 per cent.

At Bhavan's Gangabux Kanoria Vidyamandir, 114 students scored above 90 per cent. Arjya Sarkar topped the school with 98.6 per cent, followed by Anusmita Kanjilal with 98.4 per cent and Arkaprovo Sen and Abhigyan Acharya with 98.2 per cent each.

Delhi Public School Ruby Park said 259 students scored 90 per cent or above, while 652 secured more than 80 per cent. Kushagra Gupta topped the school with 98.60%, followed by Namashree Majumdar with 98% and Aditi Kumari with 97.80 per cent.

At Birla High School, Kanishk Pilaniwala topped the school with 98.6 per cent, followed by Raghav Binani and Aayush Sonthalia with 97.4 per cent each.
