New Delhi, Oct. 3 -- West Bengal Higher Education minister Jagannath Chattopadhyay on Saturday said Bengal must reclaim its historic role as a source of Indian knowledge and called upon higher education institutions to take Indian knowledge traditions to students through Indian languages.
Speaking at a national conference on "Integrating Indian Knowledge System in Higher Education", jointly organised by Vidya Bharati Uchcha Shiksha Sansthan and the Calcutta University, Chattopadhyay said Bengal had a greater responsibility in bringing about a "role reversal" in the education system.
He said the British had chosen Bengal as the first laboratory for their education system and that those running higher education institutions in the state now had the greatest responsibility to reverse that legacy.
"Bengal must change continuously. We have to change for our existence, for Bengali identity and for the Bengali language," he said.
He said the discussion should move beyond criticism and ridicule of Indian Knowledge Systems and focus on how they could be incorporated systematically into education and examination.
The conference was attended by Union Minister of State for Education and Development of North Eastern Region Sukanta Majumdar, Vidya Bharati Uchcha Shiksha Sansthan's all-India president Kailash Chandra Sharma, Calcutta University Vice-Chancellor Ashutosh Ghosh, vice-chancellors of state universities, teachers, researchers and students.
