New Delhi, Sept. 19 -- The West Bengal government is learnt to have identified nine Nadia mouzas for land acquisition for the proposed 2000-acre greenfield airport at Kalyani and restricted registration of property documents in the areas.
The mouzas are Birpara, Char Jadubati, Ganga Mohanpur, Char Madhusuanpur, Sarati, Murutipur, Umapur, Iswaripur and Kalyani. Registration officers have been directed not to register documents involving properties there. The airport was announced in the 2026 state Budget as a project aimed at easing capacity pressure at Kolkata airport and improving air connectivity in the region.
Around 2000 acres are expected to be required for the project. The government already has about 240 acres in the identified area, including a 172-acre brick field. The rest will have to be acquired, with Kalyani and Birpara accounting for the largest portions, followed by Sarati and Murutipur.
The proposed airport is expected to have two parallel runways aligned northeast-southwest. Passenger and cargo terminals and an air traffic control tower are planned on the eastern side of the runways. The runway, including clearance at both ends, is expected to stretch about 5km, with a width requirement of around 500 metres. Taxiways and parking bays are also part of the plan. The project is being planned on the lines of greenfield airports at Jewar near Delhi and Navi Mumbai.
