Kolkata, Sept. 15 -- West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday thanked the Centre and posted on "X" after the Centre granted administrative approval for six major road infrastructure projects in the state.
The funds have been sanctioned to West Bengal under the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) scheme for 2026-27, with the projects having a combined estimated cost of Rs 1,042.62 crore.
The sanction, based on proposals submitted by the state Public Works Department (PWD), covers more than 194km of road networks across North Bengal, South Bengal and the Junglemahal region.
The projects are expected to strengthen connectivity in areas where road infrastructure is critical for the movement of people, agricultural produce and goods.
The CM on Tuesday thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari for approving the projects.
"Strengthening rural and highway connectivity remains a top priority for our administration," Adhikari said, adding that the state PWD would ensure timely execution and adherence to quality standards. The CM said the approval comes at a time when the state government is seeking to accelerate infrastructure development and improve road connectivity between rural centres and major highways. Officials said improved road links could also help reduce travel time, facilitate logistics and provide better access to markets and public services.
The sanctioned projects are significant, with the inclusion of North Bengal and Junglemahal giving the road package a wider regional footprint.
For the state government, timely completion will now be crucial to translate the Centre's financial approval into visible improvements on the ground.
The Centre-approved projects include Changrabandha to Mathbhanga in Cooch Behar, which will cost Rs 190 crore; Dainhat to Monteswar Road, which will cost Rs 139 crore; and Burdwan to Katwa Road, which will cost Rs 156 crore.
