Kolkata, Sept. 13 -- Police arrested a youth on Saturday for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman inside her home in the Bakultala area of Baruipur in South 24-Parganas.
The incident took place in the afternoon when the woman was alone at home. According to police, the accused had been engaged by the woman's father-in-law as a labourer for domestic work. Taking advantage of the house being empty, he allegedly sexually assaulted the woman.
After her father-in-law returned home, the woman narrated the incident. Police were immediately informed, while neighbours were also alerted. The neighbours subsequently detained the accused and handed him over to the police after they arrived.
Police said legal procedures were initiated in accordance with the prescribed Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), following which the woman was sent for a medical examination.
Senior officials of the Baruipur Police District said further legal action would be taken strictly in accordance with the law after completion of the requisite procedural formalities. They said the matter was being dealt with with utmost sensitivity and importance.
Police also urged people not to circulate any unverified, speculative or misleading information regarding the incident, saying such rumours could create unnecessary tension and adversely affect the law-and-order situation in the area.
