India, July 22 -- As police dispersed protesters across central Delhi during the Cockroach Janata Party's (CJP) 'Chalo Sansad' march, Gurdwara Bangla Sahib opened its doors to hundreds of youths seeking shelter after the baton charge and tear gas. A large crowd gathered outside the gurdwara on Monday evening before many were allowed inside. Videos on social media showed sewadars managing the crowd at the entrance. Some protesters spent the night in the gurdwara's common area after hours on the streets. "Everyone is welcome here. The common area and langar are open to everybody," said Paramjit Singh Chandhok, Chief Advisor to the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee. He said the gurdwara did not turn away anyone seeking food or shelter and made no distinction based on identity or beliefs. However, no formal request for accommodation had been submitted by any individual or group, he added.
