Malda, Nov. 3 -- With an aim to curb environmental pollution and preserve soil fertility, the English Bazar Block Assistant Director of Agriculture's office organised an awareness programme in Malda on Tuesday, urging farmers to refrain from burning crop residues after harvesting.
The programme was organised to mark Crop Residue Burning Prevention Day. A special awareness tableau was inaugurated from the premises of the Block Assistant Director of Agriculture's office, followed by a rally involving farmers and agriculture department officials.
The tableau and rally travelled through different areas, spreading awareness about the harmful consequences of burning agricultural waste. The rally eventually culminated at Malda Krishi Bhavan. Speaking on the occasion, Malda Deputy Director of Agriculture Bidyut Barman said: "Burning crop residues causes air pollution and adversely affects soil fertility by destroying essential nutrients and beneficial microorganisms.
Farmers should adopt environment-friendly methods of managing agricultural waste instead of setting fire to their fields."
He further emphasised the need to encourage sustainable agricultural practices to protect both the environment and long-term agricultural productivity.
Among those present were Champak Biswas, Assistant Director of Agriculture, Malda Sadar subdivision; Bipad Bhanjan, ATMA project director; and Bikrant Saha, Assistant Director of Agriculture, English Bazar, along with other officials and staff members.
