Cooch Behar, Aug. 4 -- Hundreds of ASHA workers staged a demonstration outside the office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH) in Cooch Behar on Tuesday, demanding strict action against those allegedly responsible for the death of an ASHA worker and Rs 50 lakh compensation for her family.

The protesters alleged that on August 2, BJP MLA Chandana Bauri of Bankura made objectionable remarks and issued threats to ASHA workers.

They claimed the incident caused severe mental trauma to an ASHA worker, who later died. Condemning the incident, ASHA workers and their supporters marched to the CMOH office, staged a protest and submitted a memorandum to the administration.

Protesting ASHA worker Bhavatarani Sarkar said: "We demand an impartial investigation and strict legal action against those responsible. The family of the deceased should be provided financial assistance of Rs 50 lakh. ASHA workers have long served as one of the pillars of the public healthcare system, and it is the government's responsibility to ensure our safety, dignity and security."

The protesters warned that they would intensify their agitation if their demands were not addressed promptly.
